Top 10 Mid Cap Stocks: What Our Quant Model Spotted
AS OF 05 OCT 2026 · SOURCE: 72Money Editorial Desk
A lot of mid cap investors pick a good company and then buy it at a bad price. The stock is strong, everyone is talking about it, and it has already run up. A few weeks later it pulls back and the holder starts doubting a perfectly sound idea.
We wanted a screen that handles both questions at once: is this a stock worth owning, and is now a reasonable time to look at it? So we ran our two in-house models over the mid cap universe and kept only the stocks where both said yes.
Two models, two different questions
The first is our Trading Ranges model. It looks at how a stock has moved in the past and works out a price band where the stock has roughly an 80% chance of trading over the next one to three months. It also tags each stock's medium-term direction. The part we care about here is simple: if a stock is bullish and its price sits near the bottom of its band, the model sees more room above than below.
The second is our AI + Quant model. It gives every listed stock above ₹500 crore in market cap a score out of 100, made up of four parts: Fundamental (out of 30), Technical (out of 30), Risk (out of 20) and Macro (out of 20). A high score points to a solid business with a healthy chart, sensible risk and a supportive backdrop.
On its own, each model has a blind spot. The range model will happily flag a weak business that happens to be cheap within its band. The AI + Quant score tells you what is good but says nothing about timing. Used together, one covers for the other.
Four checks every stock had to pass
We started with our mid cap universe and kept only the stocks that the Trading Ranges model also flagged as bullish. That left a pool of 47. Each one then had to clear four checks:
- Near the bottom of its range. The current price sits in the lower third of its 80% trading band, or just below it.
- Enough room to run. The top of the band is at least 10% above today's price. Anything smaller barely covers costs and noise.
- Already in an uptrend. The price is in the upper half of its 52-week range. We want pullbacks within a rising trend, and we avoid stocks that are cheap because they keep falling.
- A decent business. The AI + Quant score is 55 or higher.
The third check is where the momentum comes from. A stock can be in the lower part of its short-term band and still be near its 52-week high. That combination, a strong year with a soft few weeks, is exactly what we were looking for.
19 stocks passed all four.
Ranking the 19: lowest total wins
To pick 10 from 19, we ranked every stock three times, with 1 as the best each time:
- by its Technical score, for momentum
- by its AI + Quant score, for quality
- by its upside to the top of the range, for reward
The 10 that made the cut
Gland Pharma comes out on top, ranked 1st on momentum and 2nd on quality.
Welspun Corp has the most room in the group, with the top of its band 26% above the current price. Radico Khaitan is trading just under the bottom of its band, which the model reads as an even cheaper entry point. Info Edge scrapes in at number 10 mainly on upside, with lower momentum and quality ranks than the rest.
What to keep in mind
Three of the ten are in Basic Materials, and two of those, Gujarat Fluorochemicals and Navin Fluorine, are both fluorochemical makers. They are likely to move together, so holding both is closer to one bet than two.
Places 6 to 8 are tied on total rank. Sona BLW, MCX and GSK Pharma are split only by their Technical scores, so read their order loosely.
An 80% range also means the price lands outside it about one time in five. A stock can break below its band, and some will. The screen narrows the list. It does not remove risk, and the picture can change quickly once results season or a market-wide sell-off arrives.
The short version
Look for quality mid caps that are already trending up, then wait for them to dip toward the bottom of their expected range. That is all this screen does, and it is a habit any investor can borrow, with or without our models.
We will run the screen again next month and see how this list held up.
